1.Eat A Healthier Diet

Eating a healthier diet will not just help protect you from developing illnesses but also diseases including heart disease, joint problems and diabetes. Other benefits include possible weight loss, more energy as well as hair and skin looking better.

A healthy diet would include at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables per day, be rich in fish, rice, pulses and nuts with plenty of water. Intake of red meat, dairy products, salt, sugar and caffeine should all be reduced.

2.Take Regular Exercise

Taking regular exercise will make you feel fitter and make you less prone to aches and pains. Another benefit is that it will help your lungs and heart to work more effectively and will reduce the risk of heart disease.

Good forms of exercise that will improve your overall level of fitness include swimming, cycling, brisk walks and dancing.

Exercise should not wear you out but should make you breathless. Increase your exercise slowly and aim to do at least three 20-minute sessions each week.

3.Giving Up Smoking

The best change a smoker can make is to give up! By stopping, the risk of dying early reduces immediately. Whether it's for you, a family member or a friend see page 4 for more information and tips on giving up. Your pharmacist may offer services or more information to help smokers quit successfully.

4.Limit Your Alcohol

Although drinking one or two units of alcohol a day may be good for you by lowering risk of heart disease, drinking in excess of this is harmful and can cause illnesses such as liver disease and some cancers.

The recommended limit for men is less than 3 units per day. For women it is less than 2 units per day of alcohol. A unit is equivalent to a small glass of wine or half a pint of beer.

Try to have one or two alcohol free days a week and try to spread your weekly allowance rather than use it in a single binge.

5.Relax More

Some experts believe that stress can cause ill health. Stress can cause symptoms like irritability, sleeplessness and rapid heart rate. Where possible, try to change things in your life that make you feel stressed. Learning how to relax whenever you feel stressed would be useful, or, engage in an absorbing activity like gardening may help.
