Most of us look forward to nice weather in Summer, when we can enjoy a trip to the countryside or an afternoon sunbathing in the garden. But if you are one of the 10% of the population who suffer from hay fever, these hot sunny days can be miserable. The high pollen count which occurs on Summer days like these can cause severe discomfort for sufferers who may need to stay indoors while their friends and family enjoy the sunshine.

What is hay fever?
Despite it's name, hay fever is not caused by "hay" and it does not produce a fever! It is however, caused by an allergy to pollen, usually from grasses, but sometimes from trees and moulds, that are released into the air in Spring and early Summer.

What are the symptoms?
Sufferers of hay fever may complain of :-

• A stuffy or runny nose

• Itchy, sore, watery eyes

• Frequent sneezing

• A sore throat

• Wheezing or coughing

Not surprisingly these symptoms are usually accompanied by a feeling of general misery!

Can it be treated?
A wide variety of hay fever treatments can be bought without a prescription, and will provide effective relief for most sufferers. Your pharmacist will be happy to help you choose the most suitable products for your needs.

What other steps can I take?
For any sufferer of hay fever, it is important to try to avoid contact with pollen. This is quite difficult to do, but a few sensible precautions may help reduce the problem.

• Avoid walking in long grass and trips to the countryside

• Holiday at the coast rather than inland - the pollen count is much lower

• Wear sunglasses on sunny days

• Wash your hair if you have been to the countryside

• Avoid mowing the lawn or weeding

• Avoid bringing garden flowers, and their pollen, into the house

• Keep windows closed whenever possible - particularly when driving in the car

The pollen count is often given on TV and radio weather forecasts. Listen for it and try to plan your outings for days when the pollen count is lower, this can help to reduce the severity of attacks.

If symptoms are particularly severe, or do not respond to treatments purchased from the pharmacy, ask your doctor for help.
